The Other Night Sky

Photobucket
Officially, what you're seeing does not exist. In fact, none of the 189 satellites in Trevor Paglen's exhibit The Other Night Sky (pictured) are officially acknowledged by the government, because they are (presumably) used for spying. The photographer used documents collected by amateur astronomers to predict where and when the real-life UFOs would be flying by, and then he captured them in these time-lapse photos. Paglen says they have metaphorical value (something about Galileo and church doctrine), but we say they're simply as beautiful as they are unsettling—in more ways than one.
The Other Night Sky, now through Sept. 14, BAM Galleries, 2626 Bancroft Way, Berkeley, CA, (510) 642-0808, bampfa.berkeley.edu

Donatella Versace Dedicates Line to Barack Obama

Photobucket
I think it's safe to say that the fashion/entertainment world has got Baracks back. Maybe not Marc jcobs but I think he's got everyone else on his team. In a latest announcement, Italian designer Donatella Versace will pay homage to Obama in her upcoming 2008 spring/summer collection. Much of the inspiration is derived from the notion that Obama is “a relaxed man who doesn’t need to flex muscles to show he has power.” Hmm.

Portsmouth FC stadium by Herzog & de Meuron

Photobucket
Architects Herzog & de Meuron have unveiled revised plans for a football stadium on the waterfront at Porstmouth in England. The proposal, for Horsea Island in Portsmouth harbour, replaces an earlier design for a stadium located in the city centre. Herzog & de Meuron’s scheme includes a new 36,000 seater stadium for Portsmouth FC, an exhibition centre, housing and a waterfront park. I wish they built stadiums like this in the states.

Versace edition Lamborghini LP640 Roadster

Photobucket

Lamborghini and Versace have teamed up again to offer a special edition of Lamborghini's Murcielago LP640. As you would expect from a Versace Lamborghini, all the stops were pulled out to ensure the utmost luxury and extravagance. The bright white exterior of the car is plastered with Versace's Greek motif, while the interior has full-grain, hand-embroidered, white nappa leather on the seats, dashboard and center console. The Versace edition Murcielago also gets a transparent engine cover that showcases the V12 for the first time. The special edition, unveiled tuesday at Versace's Via Gesu 12 in Milan during Men's Fashion Week, was accompanied by a new range of Lamborghini Versace merchandise, including leather luggage, gloves, driving shoes and an assortment of other accessories. Unlike the Versace Lamborghini collaboration in 2006, this run of cars will be available to the public..... but you will not be able to afford it.

Drawerment

Photobucket
Drawerment is a composition of drawers collected from old office furniture. The installation enables viewers to find their own story in it. In 1993, Tejo Remy designed a the iconic "Chest of Drawers“. He assembled different kinds of drawers into an accidental and dynamic composition. Jaraslov Jurica took this idea apart and let the drawers fly free to find their own position in the corner of the room. The Drawerment could also be a small anniversary of 15 years of "Chest of Drawers“ - A piece of art that let loose the "rigid“ era of product design at that time. The composition has been designed for Demakersvan | dutch design house as a part of their renovated studio in Rotterdam.

NASA Scientists Make Magnetic Fields Visible

Photobucket

Magnetic fields are invisible, at least usually. But Scientists from NASA's Space Sciences Laboratory have made them visible as "animated photographs," using sound-controlled CGI and 3D compositing. It makes the fields, as explained by the scientists, dance in an absolutely gorgeous movie called Magnetic Movie. One again, this is must see. The video is below.

RVCA and Cinelli teamed up for an exhibition today at VASF Gallery in San Francisco. The exhibition showcases custom designed bikes by many talented artists including Ashley Macomber, Clare Rojas, C.R. Stecyk III, Dan Murphy, DMOTE, Jesse Geller, Josh Lazcano, KAWS, Madsaki, Phil Frost, RVCA founder PM Tenore, and Stephen Powers. As an employee of RVCA I can honestly say I am depressed that I had to work Thursday in Costa Mesa while many of my co-workers went to this amazing show at the SF store. This is life at the bottom of the totem pole. Anyways this show is killer and all the bikes look amazing. If you find yourself in Norcal this is a must see exhibit.

Uncontacted Indigenous Tribe Discovered in South American Jungle.

Photobucket
One of South America’s few remaining uncontacted indigenous tribes has been spotted and photographed on the border between Brazil and Peru. The Brazilian government says it took the images to prove the tribe exists and help protect its land. The pictures, taken from an airplane, show red painted tribe members brandishing bows and arrows. More than half the world’s 100 uncontacted tribes live in Brazil or Peru, Survival International says. Stephen Corry, the director of the group- which supports tribal people around the world said such tribes would “soon be made extinct” if their land was not protected. Disease is also a risk, as members of tribal groups that have been contacted in the past have died of illnesses that they have no defense against, ranging from chicken pox to the common cold. It's bazaar to see that in the year 2008 there are still 100 tribes in existence uncontacted by the modern world. I think it's pretty great.
